One Guy Forgot to Give Up Runs and It Ruined Everything
FINAL · Tampa Bay Rays 2 @ Seattle Mariners 1
Seattle hosted Tampa Bay on Saturday night and came this close to a win — which, in baseball, counts exactly as much as not coming close at all. Final score: Rays 2, Mariners 1.
Drew Rasmussen was the problem. Seven innings, zero earned runs, eight strikeouts. The Mariners managed to match Tampa Bay homer for homer — Jonathan Aranda went deep for the Rays, Julio Rodríguez answered right back for Seattle — but nobody told Rasmussen that tied games are supposed to stay tied.
Logan Gilbert was no slouch either: 6.2 innings, six strikeouts, two earned runs. On most nights that's a quality start worth celebrating. Tonight it was just enough rope to lose by one. Gilbert took the loss. The Mariners took the bus home. Tampa Bay took the W.
