Tyler Mahle threw six innings of shutout ball for Atlanta, racked up nine strikeouts, and still walked away with a loss. That's the kind of afternoon that makes a pitcher want to reconsider his career choices. Max Fried was just a tick better on the other side, going 6.1 innings without allowing an earned run and punching out seven for New York. When your guy is dealing and their guy is also dealing, it comes down to the little things — and the little things went Yankees today. Matt Olson provided Atlanta's only real pop with a solo shot, but one home run in a 3-2 game is basically a participation trophy. Ryan McMahon went 2-for-3 with an RBI for New York and quietly did exactly what the Yankees needed while the pitchers were busy having a staring contest. Final: Yankees 3, Braves 2. Mahle deserved better. Baseball disagreed.
